About this tool
Check that a download is intact, or hash any text, without sending it anywhere. Choose SHA-256 for everyday checks, or SHA-512 for longer digests. SHA-1 is available for older systems but is weak for security uses. MD5 is not offered because browsers do not include it, and it is not safe for security.
How to use Hash Generator
- Choose SHA-256, SHA-512 or SHA-1.
- Type text, or add a file to hash.
- Copy the hex hash that appears.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no MD5?
Browsers do not provide MD5 in the built-in crypto API, and MD5 is broken for security uses, so this tool sticks to SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512.
Is SHA-1 safe?
No, not for security uses such as password storage or certificates. It is only here for compatibility with older checksums.
Does my file leave this device?
No. Hashing runs in your browser, and the file is cleared from the page 5 minutes after your last change.
